dog bite
  • Was bit by neighbor's dog March 7, 2010 at approximately 2:15pm
  • Was waiting for elevator, owner Robert Cratty and dog Shadow were exiting the elevator
  • Shadow approached me, sniffed my knee, then bit me on my right thigh above the knee
  • I yelled "oh, my God!" from the pain and surprise
  • waved Mr. Cratty away because dog was still straining against leash and lunging, I did not feel confident that he had control of the dog
  • told Mr. Cratty that I was fetching my husband as I limped into elevator
  • I called Rich from cellphone and asked him to come and get me
  • Rich helped me back to apartment to check and dress the wound
  • I called OB and family practice doctors, got answering service (it was Sunday); while Rich got Mr. Cratty's and Shadow's information; Mr. Cratty offered to cover medical expenses
  • received call from on-call doctor at OB clinic about 1 hr from the incident: she advised we go to Emergency Room or Urgent Care
  • went to Virginia Hospital Center, was able to confirm with the on-call vet at Shadow's vet hospital that Shadow was up-to-date with vaccinations, including rabies
  • Emergency Room PA said we had dressed the wound properly, large hematoma and bleeding mostly from abrasions, was given Rx for antibiotic to prevent skin infection and was advised to see my family care doctor to consider tetanus shots
  • Next day, Monday, March 8, saw PA at my family care clinic. We discussed that I will not need a tetanus booster because I received one March 3, 2005 (and this is effective 10 years). Was given Rx for a less potent antibiotic and was advised to only fill it if we observe the wound to be getting worse (weeping, bleeding, fever, etc).
  • Received vm from USAA Insurance (Mr. Cratty's insurance provider). I called back Tuesday March 9. Provided recorded statement as to what happened. Was provided an address and claim number that medical providers could send my bills to. Was advised to call, if there would be further medical appointments.
